PRAYER ยท 2 of 22
Invocation to Ahura Mazda
We begin with the Ahuna Vairya prayer, the most sacred of our Zoroastrian prayers. Ahuna Vairyo, the 'Most Beneficial Rulership,' we invoke the Wise Lord Ahura Mazda, the Amesha Spentas, and all the Yazatas. We pray, 'Ahuna Vairyo, datishnau afrashno zairishtaem... ' May the divine energies of the universe guide and protect us. We recite the Ashem Vohu, 'Vohu manah asha vahiishta...' - the harmony of good mind and truth. May our thoughts, words, and actions be in alignment with the divine plan. We call upon the celestial beings to bear witness to our devotion and to bless us with their presence.

RITUAL ยท 3 of 22
The Sacred Fire Ritual
As we tend the sacred fire, we offer sandalwood and prayers to the flames. The fire represents Asha, the divine spark of truth and righteousness. It symbolizes the illumination of the soul and the burning away of ignorance and negativity. With each offering, we pray for the purification of our hearts and the guidance of the Wise Lord. The flames dance and flicker, reminding us of the eternal nature of the divine and the transience of human life. May our offerings be acceptable to Ahura Mazda, and may we be granted the wisdom to follow the path of truth.

Introducing the Gatha
Today, we recite Yasna 29, a Gatha composed by the Prophet Zarathustra over 3000 years ago. This sacred song, known as the 'Cry of the Soul of the Earth,' expresses the deep longing of the earth and all living beings for spiritual awakening and harmony with nature. These ancient words, imbued with the wisdom of the ages, continue to resonate with seekers today. They remind us of our responsibility to care for the earth and to strive for a world of truth, justice, and beauty.

Sacred Verses โ€” Part I
Hear, O Earth, and let my plaintive voice reach the sky. Aided by Vohu Manah, I will speak to thee in clear terms. A worshipper comes, desiring to propitiate thee with good thoughts, words, and deeds. He seeks to heal thy distressed soul and to bring thee solace. O Earth, thy cry for help has reached the heavens, and Ahura Mazda has heard thy plea. May the Wise Lord guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us the wisdom to care for thee.

Understanding the Gatha
These verses express the deep interconnectedness of all living beings and the earth. The Avestan concept of 'Vohu Manah' - good mind or wisdom - guides us on the path of righteousness. The Gatha emphasizes the importance of living in harmony with nature and caring for the well-being of all creatures. The 'cry of the soul of the earth' represents the longing of the natural world for spiritual awakening and balance. May we strive to embody the principles of truth, compassion, and wisdom, and may our lives be a reflection of the divine spark within us.

Teaching: Gratitude for creation
In Yasna 29, the Cry of the Soul of the Earth, we find a profound expression of the Earth's longing for the return of its sacred spirit. This hymn is a call to awakening, urging us to recognize the intrinsic value of creation and to live in harmony with nature. At the heart of Zoroastrian theology lies the concept of Asha, or truth and righteousness, which guides us toward a life of virtue and harmony. Vohu Manah, the embodiment of wisdom and good mind, inspires us to think positively and act constructively. Spenta Mainyu, the beneficent spirit, represents the creative force that shapes the universe. As we reflect on these principles, we cultivate gratitude for the intricate web of life and our place within it. By embracing Asha, Vohu Manah, and Spenta Mainyu, we align ourselves with the divine plan and honor the sacredness of creation.

The Amesha Spentas
The Amesha Spentas, six in total, are the divine beings that emanate from Ahura Mazda, the Wise Lord. Each of these benevolent spirits embodies a specific virtue that guides us toward a life of wisdom, courage, and righteousness. Haurvatat, wholeness, and Ameretat, immortality, are particularly relevant to our theme of gratitude for creation. Haurvatat represents the perfection and completeness of the natural world, while Ameretat symbolizes the eternal and indestructible essence of life. By invoking these Amesha Spentas, we acknowledge the intrinsic value of the world and commit to preserving its beauty and wonder. As we strive to emulate these virtues, we become co-creators, working in harmony with the divine to sustain and uplift the world.

Living the Wisdom
As we internalize the wisdom of Yasna 29 and the teachings of the Amesha Spentas, we begin to see the world in a new light. We recognize that our actions have consequences, not just for ourselves, but for the entire web of life. A practical application of this wisdom is to adopt a lifestyle that honors the earth and its resources. This might involve reducing our consumption, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable practices. By making conscious choices, we embody the virtues of Vohu Manah and Asha, contributing to the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants. As we walk this path, we become beacons of hope, inspiring others to join us in this sacred endeavor.

Recognizing Druj
Yet, there exists a force that seeks to disrupt the harmony of creation: Druj, the Lie. This destructive principle manifests in various forms, from deceit and manipulation to pollution and destruction. In modern times, Druj can take on insidious guises, such as the denial of climate change or the exploitation of natural resources for personal gain. To recognize and resist Druj, we must cultivate discernment, critical thinking, and a deep connection to the natural world. By being aware of the subtle presence of Druj, we can make informed choices and take actions that align with the principles of Asha and Vohu Manah. As we strive to live in accordance with the truth, we become agents of positive change, working to dispel the darkness of Druj and usher in a brighter future.

STORY ยท 12 of 22
A Story from Tradition
The Shah-nameh, the epic poem of Persia, tells the story of Rustam, a hero who embodied the virtues of courage, wisdom, and loyalty. One day, Rustam encountered a terrible demon, Dahak, who represented the forces of chaos and destruction. As Rustam battled Dahak, he realized that the demon's power was rooted in the darkness within human hearts. This story reminds us that the struggle between Asha and Druj is not just an external conflict, but also an internal one. As we strive to live in accordance with the principles of truth and wisdom, we must confront our own shadows and weaknesses, that we may emerge victorious in the battle against Druj.

The Holy Immortals
Let us consider in depth the Amesha Spenta, Vohu Manah. This divine being represents the embodiment of wisdom, intelligence, and good mind. Vohu Manah inspires us to think positively, to cultivate a constructive and optimistic attitude, and to make choices that align with the greater good. By invoking Vohu Manah, we seek to develop our own wisdom and discernment, that we may navigate life's challenges with clarity and purpose. Another Amesha Spenta, Spenta Mainyu, represents the creative force that shapes the universe. This divine being embodies the power of growth, transformation, and evolution. As we connect with Spenta Mainyu, we tap into the dynamic energy of creation, and become co-creators, working in harmony with the divine to bring forth a brighter future.

The Cosmic Order
The cosmic order, as revealed in Zoroastrian teachings, is a dynamic and evolving process. At its heart lies the struggle between Asha, the principle of truth and righteousness, and Druj, the Lie. This conflict plays out on multiple levels, from the individual to the collective, and from the material to the spiritual. As we exercise our free will, we make choices that either support or undermine the cosmic order. By aligning ourselves with Asha, we contribute to the triumph of good, and the world is transformed. The ultimate victory of Asha over Druj is assured, yet it requires our participation and commitment. As we strive to live in harmony with the natural world and to embody the virtues of the Amesha Spentas, we become agents of positive change, working to bring about a brighter future for all.
